What can i do about my Ford Escort Alternator malfunction?

About 4 weeks ago, I bought a 1999 Ford Escort that was in great shape, and it has been great on mileage and nning in general. All of sudden, over the last couple of days, my car has been stopping wheniever i hit the brake, and the battery signal lights up, and i understand this as the battery life being drained. I would like to know, is there anything that I can do to make my alternator function better?
Am i not allowed to drive it until i get it replaced?
If i can drive it, tips on how to drive safe with it?
Thanks a lot.

WHEN EVER YOU APPLY BRAKE IT STOPS

CALL YOUR MECHANIC TO CHECK WHETHER ALL THE SPARK PLUGS ARE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY.

IF THERE IS ANY OIL ON THEM THE IGNITION WILL BE INCOMPLETE THERBY RESULTING IN LESS POWER AND CONSISTENCY IN POWER DELIVERY

IF IT IS OK

CHECK IF THE CARBON BRUSHES OF THE DYNAMO ARE OK IT NEEDS TO BE FEQUENTLY REPLACED AND IF IT IS NOT OK ELECTRICITY GENERATED WILL NOT BE PASSED IN THE CIRCUITS

THE CONNECTIONS ARE NOT LOOSE.

AND ALSO CHECK IF THE FUSE BOX IS OK N IN SHAPE

IF ALL THESE STEPS DO NOT PROVE TO BE A REMEDY DO WHAT YOUR MECHANIC SAYS

BUT BE SURE TO CHECK IT STEP BY STEP BEFORE DOING ANY MAJOR WORK FOR THE MECHANIC MAY NOT BE THAT CAREFUL.

USUALLY THE MECHANICS DO NOT TELL US ABOUT THE MINOR BODY WORKS THEY JUST SAY US TO CHANGE THE PARTS WHICH MAY BE REUSED IF TRIED TO BUT DONT SAY THAT IN FRONT OF ANYONE FOR U HAVE TO GET UR WORK DONE PROPERLY
